Sterling Couple Creates 'Jammin' Juices' from Caribbean Influences
By Eden Schneider Send Mail to Writer
Observer Staff Writer
Leigh and Gregory Henry created their Sterling-based company Food Collage Inc. because they both have a passion for food, entertaining and exotic flavors. With the release of their new product, Jammin' Juices, the couple has found a way to share that passion.
Jammin' Juices, a line of all-natural fruit and vegetable juices developed and marketed by the Henrys, are based on Gregory "The JuicemonÓ Henry's family recipes for gourmet fusion juices.
"The Juicemon,Ó originally from Jamaica, moved with his family to Philadelphia as a child and remembers his mother making fresh juices at home, juices that reminded him of the warm, blue Caribbean of his youth. As an adult, he and his wife decided to create and sell their own version of the family favorites he grew up enjoying.
The Henrys began adapting the recipes about four and a half years ago, when they bought fresh fruits and spices and mixed the juices in their own kitchen. Today, they work with a manufacturing plant in Milwaukee to make and bottle their three juice flavors and work with a distributor in the Washington, D.C., area to get the cases into local stores, including some in Vienna and Arlington.
Next, the Henrys plan to begin selling Jammin' Juices in Eastern Loudoun County stores and restaurants.
"We want to play an active role in the community,Ó said Gregory Henry, who donated cases of the juice to the recent Face of America event at Wolftrap. "We are really interested in getting involved and will be at community events soon,Ó added Leigh Henry.
"The Juicemon,Ó an avid soccer player himself, also wants to introduce other local sportsmen to his line of refreshing, natural juices.
"It's a healthy product,Ó he said. "The juices have more juice content than most other juices on the market now and there are no preservatives, artificial flavors or colors.Ó
The Henrys believe the naturally smooth flavors of their juices, along with the high vitamin content, will bring consumers back to Jammin' Juices over and over again.
"These juices have repeat purchase power,Ó said Gregory Henry. "The palate in this area, and overall in America, is moving into more unique flavors. This product is catering to the changing demographic and their changing taste buds.Ó
Jammin' Juices currently produces three juice flavors: Mambo Mango, Razz-ade, and C-Beta Carrot.
Mambo Mango, a rich blend of fresh mango puree and passion fruit, is the Jammin' Juice version of a popular Caribbean drink, rich in Vitamins A, B and C. Razz-ade is a mix of raspberry puree, passion fruit and tangy lemon, and C-Beta Carrot is a blend of pureed carrots, lemon juice and spices that tingle the taste buds.
Food Collage Inc. will release three more juice flavors in the next year and hopes to expand into other all-natural products in time.
"Food Collage is not just juice, but a collage of many different foods and flavors,Ó said Gregory Henry, who wants the business to grow into a self-supporting enterprise.
"We're taking our passion and making it into a family business,Ó said Leigh Henry. "It's a little idea that's beginning to bloom and as our family grows, we hope the business will too.Ó
