Tax Hike Needed to Fix Traffic Woes
To the editor:
Did you know that commuters in our area waste about two weeks sitting in traffic?
A study by the Texas Transportation Institute says that we are spending about 84 hours every year sitting in traffic. That's the equivalent of a two-week vacation!
Traffic congestion in Northern Virginia is stealing time away from our families, wasting fuel idling in gridlock, polluting the air we breathe and frustrating all of us. It's diminishing our quality of life.
We need to invest in our transportation infrastructure, but the commonwealth doesn't have enough money to adequately address our congestion problems.
If Northern Virginia's voters take matters into their own hands this November and support a half cent sales tax hike, they will raise about $5 billion for road and transit projects to keep people, traffic and deliveries moving.
Supporters of the transportation referendum say the half penny will cost the average household about 25 cents a day. That's what most of us would call "small change," but it could make a big difference.
