| Tax
Hike Needed for Better Transportation |
|
To the editor:
|
| The citizens of Northern Virginia are facing a decision
on Nov. 5 that will define our generation. We must take control
of our transportation destiny and vote "yes" for the transportation
referendum. |
| I have listened intently to advocates of both sides of the
sales tax issue. I am a small business owner and citizen of
Fairfax County and I feel compelled to support the transportation
referendum. |
| In theory, we should require the Virginia General Assembly
to step up to the plate and fix our dashboard pounding traffic
congestion problem. The reality of the situation is that it's
not going to happen. We should demand more money from Richmond.
Again, in theory, this makes good sense. In reality, however,
as Gov. Warner announced on Oct. 10, he's going to have to
lay off a minimum of 1,000 Virginia government employees.
|
| One hundred percent of nothing is nothing. |
| As I write this letter, I just received a call from one
of my sign installers telling me he's going to be late arriving
for a scheduled sign installation. Why? He's stuck in traffic.
The cost to our personal and professional lives is very real,
extremely painful and we deal with it every day. |
| I would strongly recommend that every Northern Virginian
support the transportation referendum on Nov. 5. The status
quo, no tax hike alternative, although attractive as a sound
bite (similar to the No Car Tax slogan) simply will not relieve
our traffic congestion. If we want to relieve our oppressive
traffic congestion in Northern Virginia we must, at the end
of the day, pay up. |
| There is no free lunch. |
