Hockey Letter Misread |
|
To the editor:
|
| Recently, Bob Ashdown wrote a letter criticizing my objections
to Herndon High School athletics. Specifically, I objected
to the fact that as an 11th grader, my daughter and others
in her situation, having been cut from the varsity team, are
ineligible to play junior varsity and are in a sense told
that their athletic careers are over. |
| My letter was obviously misread by Mr. Ashdown as an attack
on the field hockey coach, Ms. Pierce. I know Ms. Pierce and
have always thought highly of her. Never was she mentioned
in my original letter. |
| The Bob Ashdown solution states that the really good players
are selected to the travel teams (i.e., varsity) and the rest
should be content playing in recreational leagues (I suppose
by this he means intramurals). What this "let them eat
cake" resolution fails to consider is the fact that there
are no recreational leagues, nor intramural teams on which
these girls can play. |
| Therefore, the result is that at the ripe old age of 16,
children are being told that their athletic careers are over.
Keep in mind that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school
varsity basketball team. Had he played for Herndon, he might
not be in the position to become a member of the basketball
hall of fame. |
| Is there any good reason why the upper classmen who are
cut from varsity can not play junior varsity? Other than the
fact that we are building for the future? The system should
strive to keep as many students as possible on the athletic
fields after school. Let¯s not turn these kids loose so they
can hang-out or make-out and wind-up in trouble. |
