Council's Vote Was the Right Thing to Do |
|
To the editor:
|
| First, this letter isn't about what position was taken by
the Herndon Town Council. This letter is about the council
taking a position--in majority--about a transportation issue
of significance and importance to the town. |
| Observer editor, Tom Grein, characterized the position taken
by council as partisan in a political sense. That's because
he chose to characterize the position as being in one or another
political camp (or possibly several political camps). That's
his right--to express his opinion. |
| I take the position that the council took a look at the
future of transportation improvement in Herndon as being important
enough to address publicly, and on which to take a position--as
the individual elected representatives of the town and collectively--in
majority. |
| The editor also was critical that the position wasn't unanimous. |
| I say, úThank heavens!" I for one want, need, and expect
my elected town representatives to express their positions
publicly on issues affecting the town. If they all held the
same opinion, then the vote should have been 6 to 0 (with
one member of council absent). Since there were differences
of opinion, the vote should have been as it was. |
| I commend the council for taking a position, and would have
said the same thing had the vote gone exactly opposite of
what it did and had the editor written the same opinion. We,
the voters, now know how the council's position on this transportation
issue and the positions of each member present that night. |
| Now it's up to all of us to take the time to vote on Nov.
5 and express our opinions, taking into account the opinions
expressed by our council and others, and our own sentiments
on this issue. |
| And don't forget there are other issues on the ballot like
who some of our next elected officials should be. |

Council member |
