To the editor:
|
| I read with interest and empathy the letters by Emily Seiler
and Lori Flanagan. |
| My letter is to let them and your readers know that for
40 years the Herndon Optimist Club has been providing recreational
sports and educational programs to the kids of the Herndon
area. Today we have kids from 8 to 18 participating in football,
cheerleading, lacrosse, basketball, baseball and softball.
|
| Last year 3,300 kids participated in our sports programs.
While interest in "select" or "all-star" teams and leagues
have grown, the Herndon Optimist Club has a mandate to provide
the greatest number of kids with a good time while trying
to teach them the value of good sportsmanship, teamwork and
develop leadership skills. All kids play in all games. |
| Over the years we have added new sports to our programs
or expanded programs because kids had an interest and their
parents or other adult volunteer stepped up to organize and
provide a volunteer base to get started. The Optimist motto
is "Friend of Youth" and I encourage Ms. Seiler and Ms. Flanagan
or anyone to contact the Herndon Optimist Club through our
Web site www.herndonoptimist.org to see how they might be
able to make a difference. |
