Proud of Son, Hornet Football |
|
To the editor:
|
| It's that time of year for giving thanks for many things,
but never in my 49 years did I ever think I would be saying
thanks for football. |
| I am still in the dark regarding the game (those who sit
near me can attest to that) but for the last five years I
have had something to do on Thursday or Friday nights. When
my daughter cheered I didn't need to watch the game, but I
found myself gazing onto the field and realized I was clueless,
even though my son has played Herndon Optimist sports since
he was 6 years old. |
| When my son started playing at Herndon High School my husband
felt the need to explain the game to me so I didn't sound
as if I just arrived from the planet Venus. This year I realized
I watch a different game than most people in the stands. I
watched my son play, his friends play and his team play and
even though the final score didn't show Herndon ahead. |
| These young men played their hearts out, passing, receiving,
tackling and blocking. I learned about their character because
each week they came out and didn't stop playing till the clock
ran out. They survived indoor practices, rescheduled games
and a homecoming game that was played to very few fans and
yet they played with heart, soul strength. I am very proud
to know them and I need to tell them thanks. |
| On a more personal note, thanks to the coaches for teaching
my son. He has respect for all of them and has learned many
things from them, especially their dedication and love of
Herndon High School. Thanks, James, for loving the game and
making me love it too. Your dad and I are so very proud of
you. |
