Tax District Funds Should Not be Used for Reston Skate Park
To the editor:
Just three weeks ago, I began leading a petition drive opposing the current RCC skateboard park proposal. The petition does not oppose a skateboard park in Reston. It does, however, oppose the inappropriate use of Small Tax District 5 funds for this purpose, funds collected from residential and business property owners in Zip codes 20190, 20191, and 20194.
Specifically, our petition opposes the fact that 80 percent of the projected skateboard park users will come from outside Small Tax District 5 (meaning the current proposal is in reality a Fairfax County facility); the $1 million plus proposed price tag is disproportionate with demand, projected principally to be just 5 percent of our youth aged 6-17 (leaving unmet the many needs of the 95 percent of our youth who don't skate); and the proposal is insensitive to residential concerns considering an identical park can be built in Reston that does not abut residential neighborhoods, will cost taxpayers at least 25 percent less, and can expand well into the future.
We have already collected signatures from nearly 600 Reston residents who oppose the current proposal. While the drive originally started in West Market, we recently began canvassing the broader Reston community. We are finding that almost three of every four Reston residents that we approach at various public locations sign our petition.
Despite this, and we have kept the RCC updated on our petition-0efforts the RCC continues to represent that it has heard from more people that support the proposal than oppose it.
In my view, this reflects the RCC's biased agenda.
Many more people in our community oppose the current proposal than support it. We need your help in continuing to collect their signatures; petition drives are labor intensive. Contact us if you are interested in signing the petition or volunteering to collect signatures at 703-852-7174.
